No matter how long you spend your holidays in Torrox Costa, you will not run out of excursions. The famous Nerja dripstone caves, where the Spanish ancestors lived as collectors and hunters, are a few kilometres away. Malaga, which is very well known for the Picasso Museum, is 45 minutes away – and if you do not have a car available, the bus stops practically just below the apartment. In Granada lies the famous, well-preserved and not least impressive beautiful castle, the Alhambra, which has ensured the area’s changing ruling cultures for hundreds of years. Cordoba, where a Catholic cathedral has been built in the middle of Europe’s largest mosque, and Seville, where the historic bullfighting arena still plays a central cultural role, is also within the reach of a one-day tour.
If you do not have a car available, car rental is centrally located in Torrox Costa a few hundred meters away.
The unique nature of Andalusia
The hinterland abounds with beautiful, white villages, of which Frigilliana is probably the best known. But everywhere the authentic Andalusian culture lives on well, so up in the villages it is quite common for tapas to be included in the already affordable price for an afternoon drink.
The scenery is unique, and it is easy to get great experiences both on foot and on mountain bikes, and in the winter you can sunbathe in the morning and still ski in Sierra Nevada in the afternoon. Scuba diving, kayaking and many other water sports are available from Burriana beach in Nerja.
When shopping, you can either go to Nerja, where streets are full of people all year round, and where a wealth of specialty shops and restaurants lure you with everything your heart desires. In Vélez Mélaga less than half an hour drive away, you will find a well-equipped shopping centre where you can fill the closet without emptying the wallet. Most cities – including Torrox – have weekly cosy markets where all kinds of goods are offered from stalls. Here you will find everything from underwear to long ranges of chilli fruit, and often it is possible to bargain prices.
Andalusia is predominantly Catholic, so even the local churches are beautifully decorated – often with several impressive altars. Religion is a living part of the culture, so if you come at a time when a festival is being held in one of the nearest cities, don’t miss out on the great parades – often with the city’s saint at the forefront.
